Empowerment and Awareness-Raising Project
Aim of the Project
The aim of the Project is twofold.
On one side, it aims to answer the pressing need - among us and other Palestinian gay women - of a safe place where we can voice our feelings, frustrations and fears; a place where we can acquire knowledge about lesbianism through literature in Arabic.
On the other side, it aims to support Palestinian gay women by raising our awareness to our gender and sexual identity. This will help us develop positive attitudes towards our gender and sexuality, hence, enable us to relate to other LGBTQI women, and allow/encourage us to express our sexuality, rather than repressing it. Aswat aims to empower its members to become agents for social change. We strongly believe that when women have the adequate tools, they will be able to improve their status and bring about desirable changes in their homes, with their families, at the work place and in the larger community.
Main Activities of the Project
Meetings with a facilitator (every two weeks)
The goals of the Empowerment Group are:
- To empower Palestinian gay women by raising their awareness to their gender and sexual identity;
- To give them the tools to support other women and bring changes to our community;
- To create a place where they can share their fears and thoughts.
Meetings (once a month)
It aims to create a safe and anonymous space for Palestinian gay women to be, meet, talk and share experiences.
The support line is open two days a week* (for the time being)
It has been created to:
- Give information about Aswat;
- Give support to women who have questions about their sexuality/gender identity;
- Give support to women who need the space to share their experiences, fears, and
feelings and are unable to come to Aswat meetings and/or do not want to be exposed.
